Who is Simon Horton?
This is where I tell you stuff like how I grew up in Stratford-On-Avon, England, and that I've had 15+ years in consumer advertising in London and New York. Or I could just show you some odd stuff I get up to in my neighborhood, like how I found unidentified roadkill at my local block party where the kids were playing and added a fun interactive game - 'RoadKillQuiz.'
WHAT IS IT? SQUIRREL OR RAT? When I left it was neck and neck.
Lucky Cat Project
And this was a weekend project that I sold to my local Brooklyn cat charity.
IDEA: 'Lucky cats' have brought good fortune to people for centuries, so it's time cats had some good fortune themselves - particularly those at the Brooklyn Animal Action.
I had each lucky cat hand-glazed to resemble a cat in need of adoption and placed next to cash registers in over 40 locations in Brooklyn.
And I got Ricky Gervais helped out. He signed the collar, took this photo and posted it to his 15 million follower of Twitter and Facebook.
PIRATES
The playground where my 5-year-old plays was knocked down, but months later, no playground.
I didn't complain (I'm British). I subverted a construction site sign, making out that the workers are in fact pirates digging for buried treasure (and have no intention of building a new playground).
FUDGE-POWERED RADIO
I spent several glorious months at a top digital agency - full of wonderful people, and a very impressive tech collection... I added a radio and label without anyone noticing. (The first fudge-powered radio!)
KELLOGG’S CEREAL LAUNCH
I wrote and illustrated a Kellogg's campaign for Nature’s Pleasure. It's bonkers that they let me write AND illustrate all this, but they did. (Google the reaction — here’s one article: http://www.meemalee.com/2009/07/kelloggs-natures-pleasure-fail.html)
Unfortunately, the cereal tasted awful, so they pulled it. Gutting.
POLICE AUCTIONED BIKES
I found these the other day! In my mother-in-law's neighborhood is a bike shop that sells bikes bought at police auctions. So, I wrote and illustrated some posters for the window.
URBAN BIRDTABLES
Recognition at last! Someone's spotted one of my urban bird tables. Printed in the Stratford-Upon-Avon Herald, England.
HOMELESS CATS IN A ZOO
And here's another cat project — I'm slowly working on this project in my own time. The ideas is that zoos typically boost animal populations—this actively tries to eradicate an animal 'species' - the homeless cat.
SNEAKY SWAP
And finally, if you made it this far down, thank you!! Hope it's been illuminating. So, in this project, the only thing I’m advertising is me. I covertly replaced a few actors' photos from the walls of a theatre bar with ones of me. No one noticed for months.
I wasn’t successful as a woman, so I didn’t swap the photos out.
